I had to laugh at that. It's been decades since I lived at my parent's, who are deceased. I couldn't imagine anyone trying to reach me through them.
But Trish and Mad American are correct. Jack dropped out before he dropped in, so there was never a record of him at a real job.

It's conceivable that when Jack was a youth, you had to have a job before you could get a SS#. That's how it was back in the day for me.

Neat! I haven't seen it since I was a kid. (Loved it then.) I read it a few years ago, though -- wonderful book. Depressing, though, like so much of Matheson's work.

He thought the cat was cool, but got bored rather quickly.

I see you're located between Knoxville and Chatanooga -- do you like that area? The gf and I sometimes consider relocating to Tennessee, as I've heard a lot of good things about it. I have a fond memory of your area, as I wrote my college thesis on a short story about the Civil War Battle of Chickamauga, and after college I went and visited the site.

Well, you aren't in the Social Security database until you are registered. I was a teenager before I got a social Securtiy number. My mom registered my sister and I. Had she not done that, we they wouldn't have known we existed. Apparently Jack's dad never got him hooked up.

Eighty degrees last week, highs of 58 this week, back in the 70's next. Heat isn't horrible in the summer, but the humidity sucks. It's generally a nice area and the rednecks are really funny. Lots of entertainment just watching them.
