Matt Costello and I have entered discussions with a company that wants to develop MASQUE into a videogame. Since it was originally conceived as a game (original title: DNA WARS), this is a natural. We had our first meeting yesterday and we seem to be a good fit. We're talking an Action-RPG hybrid.

If you're into games, do me a favor: Hunt down a copy (you'll have to buy it used since it's out of print) and tell us what you'd like to see in a MASQUE game.

Also Check your local library. :D

I read this book a while back in the midst of my fpw marathon, so I will try to remember without mixing it up with other books. Definitely incorparate the masque disc carrier which contained 5 (?) different masques including a self-destruct disc in case of theft. Pardon my lack of correct terminology; like I said, it has been a while since I read it. I will try to rethink the book and come up with more ideas.

The big thing that I would like to see is to be able to change to any masque at any time. The ability to steal and borrow other discs. This would make the game different everytime you played it. The changes should take place in the games real time (not a cheesy cut away.) This way you would need a little strategy if you are being attacked or don't want anyone to see.

Many different personalities for the foes is another thing you don't see very often. Make some scared, some indifferent and some downright hostile. Same goes for the any "extras" in the scenes...make a few passer's by turn hostile when they find out what your are...make some "evacuate" on themselves. Above all, make it available on PC. Can't wait for this one.

Well, part of the strategy I envision is "arming" yourself with a set number of templates (5 or 6) chosen from a wide variety before you start your mission. That would disallow changing to "any masque" and require forethought. Each masque would have advantages and disadvantages.

Just as long as you can steal/find other templates and those templates might have that "devastating" effect.

Oh, yeah. And you can also sample someone else's DNA for a template on the fly. (So can your opponents which can lead to lots of paranoia in multiplayer mode. I mean, is that trusted friend really the guy/gal you think he/she is?)

Been a long time since I've read Masque so I don't remember much about it. Guess I'll have to go back and reread it after Crisscross. If it were made into a game, I would buy it simply because your name is behind the game.

Can you tell us who the game's developer and publisher/distributor are going to be? Is this going to be a strictly single player game or have multi-player options also?

The only other thing I would advise, though this is apparently difficult in the gaming industry, is that they actually create a fully functional, glitchless (reasonably) game before it ships. It is unbelievable to me that so many companies require games to ship before they are actually completed and then rely on the customer to download a patch in order to be able to actually play or complete the game. I would much rather wait an extra 3 months for a game than purchase an incomplete non-functional game.

We're waiting for their offer. They want book and film rights as well. The money people have not done games. The developers will be experienced pros.
