This is only something Ken V. and I touched on breifly. But, since there is talk of a GU 4.5, and the GU 5 in London, we where thinking of another small one out west here, The GU 4.75! We have several board members in the west and it wou be fun to get together with them. Especially if we can time it around an FPW event. Is anyone else interested?

Well, I'm on the east coast, but if the site for the GU 4.75 (which is hysterical, BTW!) is warm and nifty, like southern California or Arizona, I'd be up for that. I might have to skip the GU 4.5 if I were to go farther west and then also go to London.

Awww...golly, I didn't mean it that way. I'm sure Wisconsin in November would be great fun because of the people. It's the people who make the GU's so enjoyable. I'm speaking from my vast experience of having attended all of one! :D

But, speaking practically, it's easier to find cheaper flights from NYC to CA or AZ than from NYC to Madison, Wisconsin.

I believe it would be southern Cali. I'm not sure on the date though. We were just kicking the idea around and I'm basically trying to see if there is any interest in the idea. But it would be cool.

F. Paul Wilson usually comes to Burbank a couple of times a year. I always go see him, though I'm not an autograph person. Count me in if the GU revolves around one of these Southern Cal signings. I can put up a few people at my place--nice view of the beach. I live between Malibu and Zuma beaches. I can also get us in for a House of Blues concert too if this is all timed just right. And the dining around here is just supoib.

Thanks for replying Steve, we'll keep all options open (House of Blues sounds cool) and see what we can put together. It sounds like Mr. Wilson will probably be out in November so we can plan from there.

Will you do it again this year? And approximatly what would the date be? (for planning purposes) It would be cool to see you again! :)

I promised myself to put this on the top of my list when I got back and I'm glad I'm not the only one following up on this. I think the key here is first to get a nod from F. Paul Wilson as to whether or not he will have time to join the west coast posters for a nice get-together after or before his Burbank signing. Secondly, we need someone to lead/organize the what's and where's and thereforth's of this event.

I don't picture this GU as a big thing like the core group GU. I see it more like a nice casual dinner, drinks and conversation. But if someone wants to bring their circus tent, well, maybe we should first wait for a response from both fpw and said leader/organizer of this GU. I vote for small. And my place is still up for a few travellers who'd like a beach front stay.

I'm up for it. The date is usually up to Dark Delicacies. But a get together while I'm out there sounds fine.

Cool, glad to hear there is still interest. I have no idea what their is to do out there but Steve has made some good suggestions. I wouldn't mind hitting one of Ken V's gun ranges, time permitting. I also like how Steve is willing to share his place. Come on folks, beach front property! I can stay in a hotel, I think people who are coming a ways should take Steve up on this. But if the time comes and he has a room, well, I ain't picky! :D

I'm still seriously considering a trip to the Left Coast. It sounds so totally decadent to say I'm flying to California for dinner with friends.

I don't think I'd be interested in a gun range, but a house near the beach (on the beach?) sounds delightful. Steve, you are a kind and trusting soul. :D

And of course, the chance for another dinner with FPW is not to be missed. I can't wait until you guys get to hang out with Effy and see what a great, for real, all round nice guy he is. You are in for a treat!

We just need the date to plan around, but we still have some time.

Well, the World Fantasy Convention is in Madison, Wisconsin, November 3-6. So we can probably expect the Califnordia visit to be one or two weekends following. Say the 10th to the 13th or the 17th to the 20th of November . . . if Paul will be here for three days. It depends on his schedule.

I think that would be the best time to plan around.

Ken V.

P.S. The gun club is about 70-75 miles east of where the GU will probably be, but if anyone wants, I can pack up some shootin' irons and ammo and we can make a day of it. Or a half day if you prefer. I'll probably have my muzzle loaders done by then, so if you want to shoot some black powder, we can include that as well.

(Maggers. Would you possibly be interested in trying a flint-lock pistol like the one Cora used in THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS? Or at least seeing one?)

Speaking of the World Fantasy Convention, I am still willing to organize something here in Madison for anyone interested. I can book a block of hotel rooms, if needed and plan some things to do. This is a great city and I'd love to meet some of the other board members. And, of course, finally meet FPW!

I'm blocking out the time to go to Madison, but I might have to do a one-day event.

I am also planning on going up there. I don't know about overnight arrangements yet. I might stay at a friend's house in Janesville (though he doesn't know it yet). Maybe I'll drag him along and make him a FPW convert.

When you put it that way, how well do I really know you guys?! And horror fans to boot! ;) But I'll take my chances...as will you (wicked laughter follows).

So, we got the nod from The Man. Now, who will organize the venture? Remember, I voted for small; after all, I can visit west coast locales any ol' time, so I'll leave the touristy stuff for the visitors. I mean, my main goal is to meet you guys. Though that gun stuff sounds interesting; I'm a sub-novice in the area, but I'm curious about how accurate the phrase "It kicks like a mule" actually is....

Re: "near the beach" : Try ON the beach. During storms we always have to sandbag the backyard. And just for clarity's sake: It's my parents' home, but we can use the guest house (big enough for three comfortably, or four to five uncomfortably) and my room (big enough for two more [besides me]--I'll provide the sleeping bags, of course). And we are a gated community so we can drink on the beach and watch the moon sink into the sea without being bothered--except by each other, of course. And for you brave outdoorsy types, you can always sleep in the sleeping bags on the beach, though by November, it might be a mite chilly.

Well, I'll check in later for updates, but it's great to see we're underway for a West Coast GU. (Left Coast?? LOL :D ).

Ken,
If this is the rifle that you made, sure, I'd enjoy seeing that. I actually did shoot a rifle once. Well, I shot it a couple of times but only on one occasion. I was fairly accurate, too, considering I'd never held any sort of shooting implement before.

Didn't see this post till today. The closest thing to me, besides shooting into the sea, is the Los Angeles Gun Club and farther down, the Whittier Shooting Range. What's close to you? Weekdays are best for me, especially Wednesdays. Do I have to pay for the bullets, club fees or any such thing?

I think you're right, Maggers; I am very trusting. :D

I'm a member of West End Gun Club, and have access at any time. You can come as my guest, and as such there are no fees. I'll bring the ammunition and the guns, so there is no cost to you. After all, you would be my guest.

Most firearms don't have really heavy recoil, but I have some special loads for my .44 Magnum that are absolutely brutal. They're even moderately stiff when fired in a rifle. But I would bring a number of other guns as well. Guns that aren't heavy thumpers.

Of course, the first thing I would show you when we got to the range, is how to properly and safely handle them . . . check to see if they're unloaded . . . all of the important stuff.

Wow! My first time with a gun. What forces will be released in me? Fear? Awe? We'll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, let me get you my open calendar dates so you can compare them to yours, and let's see what we can agree upon for late this month or early next.

Also, love the idea that I'll be taught safety first. That was the last thing on my mind...and I'm not joking. Remember, I'm the novice. I thought we'd walk into the place firing, just like on the L.A. freeways in recent months.

I'm sure we can find an agreeable time, and yes, safety is always first. They're just inanimate objects, so safety depends on us.

Boy, I must have missed that one . . . what has happened on the freeways recently? I haven't heard of a freeway shooting in more than a decade. (Mind you, the way some people drive, what surprises me is not that there are freeway shootings, but that there are so few of them.) :D

Well, Rose, as soon as some SF bookstore wants to fly me out, I'm there. The World Horror Convention is there next spring and I'll be out for that. And yes, this fall and every fall, I'm in Burbank (thanks to Dark Delicacies).

One of these days I'm going to time that right. I'm typically down in that area twice a year or more, but I've never managed to hit it at the same time you do. One day I'll pop in and say "hi". (No, that's not a threat!) :)

FPW, so there is hope! Wonderful. When it close to spring next year, my husband and I would be VERY interested in going to that convention but only if you your there. I've never been to anything like that, but it should be great fun. We are voracious readers and have sunk our teeth into all your books. Love the variety of work too. Thank you for the information. Have a great day! Rose

I went to the World Horror Convention this spring in New York City. I live in Manhattan, so it was nicely convenient. I had a great time. I didn't taste everything the convention had to offer; I was largely interested in FPW only. Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun.

Can you help me out a bit? I am very new and have never heard of this convention. I found the website and the dates are already up for spring '06 in San Francisco. I live about 25 minutes from SF, so that will be easy for us as well. You don't have to belong to anything right? Just pay at the door and browse. Any info would be good. We are definitely going and hoping FPW will sign out hardback books...Rose

Rose,
You'll have a blast, and FPW is so good and kind and will most definitely sign your books. He and his wife, Mary, who could very well be with him, are the neatest couple you will ever meet. They are both as nice as can be. You're in for a treat.

At the WHC that I attended, FPW was honored with the Grand Master Award. He got special attention and it was great fun to be a fan that night. Very cool.
