View Full Version : Quote of the Day
"I've loved these crazy gentlemen for years, and it will be a true honor traveling around America making some joyful noise with them," Alanis Morissette said. "Making art and cracking up with the Barenaked Ladies sounds like a fantasy summer to me."
(Making art? She didn't know the meaning of "irony" and it's clear she doesn't know the meaning of "art.")

I happen to like Alanis and BNL quite a bit, and if music isn't art then there is no such thing as art. If it's a matter of personal opinion, fine, but there are a lot of painters and writers out there that I don't like and it has no bearing on whether or not there work is art.

Perhaps Paul got up on the wrong side of the crypt today. I can take or leave Alanis, but any group that charted with a single called "Brian Wilson," as BNL did, will have my undying affection and respect. I saw Brian and his new band perform PET SOUNDS at Jones Beach a few years ago, and I must say I found their efforts quite...artful.

DAMMIT!!! Their work is art.
Happy now?!? I can't believe I did that. I hate it when others do it.

That's twice now Jim. Which means I have to be EXTRA careful. 'Cuz when I do it -- and I will -- you will decend upon me like a (grinning) angry sea. :D

So do I, but how precious to be stepping onstage to sing songs you've sung a hundred times before, and sing them just the way you sang them a hundred times before, and saying, "Ohh, let's go make art." (retching sound)

I think you're being very hard here, Paul. As one who strutted the stage himself many years ago, I assure you every performance is different. When Glenn Gould sat down at his piano to play Bach--music that's centuries old, performed countless times, according to the score!--he played them much the same. (Granted, his grunts may have varied.) Was he an artist? If so, in what way did he differ from what musicians like Alanis and BNL are doing today?

I'll bet you weren't with a show band like Alanis's. The set is set, the 'ad lib' comments are the same every night. It ain't art, Mike. It's a business -- show biz.

Well, sure. It's a different audience every night. They came to be entertained. Your "ad-lib" comments are new to them. It's show biz, certainly. That's a fact. But is that a bad thing? Is show biz a dirty word? Putting on a good show? Are show biz and art mutually exclusive? (Calling The Great Lorenzo!...) The money men live large, as always. The artists they feed off (and I consider all performers artists), if they're worth their salt, try to entertain as best they can, no matter what. "Value for value," I think someone once put it. (And no, I wasn't with a band like Alanis's, curse the luck!) By the way, Paul--in the revised NIGHTWORLD, any chance of the Kenton brothers joining the counterattack against Rasalom?

And of course you mean "descend."
