View Full Version : Any other gamers out there?

I'm glad to see the "Who's Reading What?" thread is still stirring here and there. If it falls too far, I figure I'll just post it again; as this is an author's board, it only makes sense that the people here are readers, so it should be an ongoing thing.

Anyhow, in my quest to get to know you folks better--any other video gamers in here?

I game on my (rather new) PC, my Xbox, and my Gamecube.

On the PC, I just finished Call of Duty and yet another playthrough of Morrowind. I'm playing the demo of Far Cry, and I think I'll be picking up the full game; the graphics are astonishing. It's been a good run, and has more than made up for the disappointment that was DX: Invisible War.

On the console side, well, not much. Tooled around with Top Spin on the Xbox, and watched my girlfriend play through Eternal Darkness on the 'Cube (which was awesome to watch).

Anyone else here play any games?

I have a PS2 but don't have a dial-up (whatever you call it on a platform system) hooked up to it. Don't really intend to.

I do play some PC games online sometimes, though I don't have the latest and greatest. I was into Diablo and D2 quite a bit and I also can be convinced to play WarCraft or StarCraft when you catch me in the right mood. Basically, I like Blizzard games. I have thought of getting some other multiplayer games (I prefer cooperative to PvP) but some of them get to be too much of an investment of money and time.

So I probably shouldn't tell you about World of Warcraft, the online multiplayer Warcraft roleplaying game that's already gathering an incredible amount of positive buzz about itself? :D

Actually, I don't game online at all. All my multiplayer is confined to my house, with my friends, on a game console, on the 50" in the living room. I like that better than 12 year old racist losers on the internet trying to figure out the newest way to spell "owned" with as few actual letters as possible.

On this computer, I play the games that came with windoze -- well, one of them anyway . . . freecell. On the old computer I had tetris, welltris, and one called Prince of Persia.

Other than that, I know absolutely nothing about computer games. I don't get out much, so is there anywhere on line where I could find out more about what is currently on the market?

P.S. Nijimeijer; that looks like "Dutch," or Nederlands as some prefer. Is it?

My son-in-law and I have a symbiosis. He works the buttons and toggles (he's been gaming since he was a kid and has great thumbs) while I strategize over his shoulder (I've designed games and have something of a 6th sense). We make a good team. Got through Max Payne recently and are into Metal Gear Solid 2 (Konami sent me a care package of games).

I'm supposed to meet with the Konami folks when I'm out in LA re the Repairman Jack game.

Also meeting early May with people who want to develop Masque into a game. Matt Costello and I want to do script and design.

Keep us posted on any games you're involved in developing. We're always looking for Christmas and birthday ideas.

Do you know if Konami is internally developing, or just publishing? And, if you're able to say so, who's interested in doing Masque? I only ask because I've been following games for close to 20 years, and I have a comfortable level of knowledge of current dev houses and such.

Ken
If you're into PC gaming, well, it's hard to find good info on what's new and interesting now, simply because most PC games magazines have gone to crap, and most of the good sites are "pay for access" now. I'd say to just keep checking out sites like IGN.com and Gamespot.com, and see what they're recommending. There's a lot out there.

As for "nijimeijer", it's simply the username I've been using since 1995. Don't even remember where I picked it up. I'm actually Puerto Rican, and my name is Ismael (although everyone calls me Ish).

I'm not into PC games, but I would like to try some. It's something I figure I could very well get interested in. I'm very new to computers and the internet.

As for Nijimeijer, what brought it to mind was the IJ letter combination. Pronounced as "eye," the only language I've seen it in is Dutch. At the beginning of a word, both letters are capitalized, as in IJselmeer. The Dutch word for frolicsome is vrolijkheid, and is pronounced FROW-like-hight. For you old movie buffs, Vrolijkheid was the name of Cary Grant's boat in the movie Father Goose.

Thanks for the sites, I'll certainly look into them.

I used to really enjoy adventure games (the Sierra titles especially) but have slowly been moving away from games. I do own an Xbox and still play the occassional game on my PC. Games I'm playing now on my PC are XIII and SimCity 4, and on my Xbox Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell 2.

The systems I have are:

SNES, N64, Gamecube, GBC, GBA (sense a trend here) and a PS Grey. I'm debating about the XBOX so I can get Crimson Skies and play Live.

If Masque and RJ end up following the current trend and do not end up on the Cube or the next Nintendo system, I WILL be buying another system.... unless the games are rushed and are put to street before final testing (ala "Enter the Matrix).

My multiplayer includes me and my 5-year old boys. One of my sons kicks my butt at Mario Kart: Double Dash every time. They are natural video game players.

Other than FPW, video games is the only other subject that I would be willing to discuss forever.

Well, in recent years The Longest Journey on PC proved that you can still make great adventure games. Other than that, everyone raves about Syberia, but I wasn't that impressed.

You should check out Beyond Good & Evil on the Xbox. That game was just one of the most fun titles I've played in years. Good adventure stuff, mixed with some action, platforming, racing. Good stuff.

I love freecell. I like the fact that it is possible to win every time and I have won every time I've played since I discovered that you could win every time. Apparently I have too much time on my hands.

A group called Phobos (they're new) wants to do Masque. I know nothing about them, hence the sitdown May 5.

Hideo Kojima himself wants to design the RJ game. I gather he's a fan.

BG&E is fantastic! I rented it via the net and will probably buy it one day. You can play through it more than once and try to get 100%. Well worth it.

I play the online text based RPG GemStone IV from Simutronics, I have been playing the same character for about 9 years and have met a lot of my fellow players irl at conventions. Made a lot of good friends this way. I have been an in game Mentor for several years helping out new players learn the ropes have gotten my wife and my 2 oldest daughters to play as well so there is a lot of competition for computer time in our house!

Other PC games include Diablo 2-Lord of Destruction, Warcraft 3- The Frozen Throne, and Civilization 3.

I bought the kids a Playstation 2 for Christmas and find I love it as much as they do. I play Hit Man 2, Medal of Honor, and Ecco the Dolphin.

Max Payne 2 was such a disappointment. It had everything it needed to be better than the first except it was too short.

I can't believe no one has said anything about Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox. GREAT game. I was a little disappointed to see Killswitch has already dropped in price. I'm dancing between the two, although I play NG more.

I remember FPW expressing an interest in NPCs like the ones from The Thing. I hope he's still going to incorporate them somehow into the RJ game. I have that same 6th sense for videogames too, but it annoys the heck out of my wife when I try to give her tips.

Speaking of Konami, anyone know if their lesser known (and talented) daughter company, Data East is still around? I'd love it if they made a sequel to Ring King.

Oh, and anyone know where I can get a copy of Word Muncher and Oregon Trail?

I've got all the systems, and prefer the PS2 to GC, XBOX, and even my PC (the only PC game I ever loves was Postal 2-- starting Gary Coleman on fire and then urinating on him to put the fire out is just good, clean, American fun).

Not a fan of RPGs, but I love adventure games. Recent ones I've beaten include The Suffering (overated), Manhunt (amazing, but beyond violent), and Simpsons Hit and Run (awesome).

I just picked up the Silent Scope collection for XBOX, along with the sniper rifle, but deadlines have cut into my play time.

Do you think my publisher will understand if I tell them I couldn't get the manuscript in because I was saving the earth from an alien invasion?

Is your preference because of the games available, or the system itself?

I have the GC for two reasons: more kid friendly games and ZELDA. Metroid Prime is a bonus, as is Eternal Darkness.

I have been a computer gamer for about 20 and some years. Right back the text adventures (anyone remember Zork?) on the BBC micro which I think was UK only. Now I only use PC's, mainly because I have other uses for that and couldnt justify a console which would only play games.

Mainly I play Everquest. I love the sense of community and helping out in general. Also it can be fun to just explore the truly vast world and ( I just know this sounds sad!) but when you pull something off which was really on the edge there is a great sense of triumph. Perhaps I should get out more?

For off-line games I am playing Age of Mythology at the moment but nothing has ever gripped me like the 11th. Hour did about 10 years ago. Maybe if I looked at it now it would miss the spot but then, well, I was losing sleep!

Having re-read the above I DO need to get out more! Going out to the pub, catch you later....

I finally took the plunge and bought a used XBOX and subscribed to XBOX Live. Now, I've got to find some others out there that will be patient with a "newbie." I got into a MechAssault game and was constantly ridiculed for not playing the right way in a game of Capture the Flag. Honestly, I had no idea what I was doing, but had fun anyway. But, Crimson Skies... that's another story. I love that game and didn't seem to have a problem playing a pickup game of that.

I play games on the PS2 and comp. For the PS2, I mainly play sports titles since these play great on a console system. I do have it hooked up to the internet, but I find the online gaming community for the PS2 to be on the "cold" side and get very tired of playing the same teams over and over because the other person wants the best team possible.

For the comp, I like playing strategy games such as Civ III or fantasy rpg's like Everquest. The online world on the comp is a lot friendlier also.

Crimson Skies is a lot of fun. When Dave was here we spent several hours going head-to-head. I haven't picked up Xbox Live yet though I am curious to see how Splinter Cell 2 is in a multiplayer version.

And in regard to Max Payne 2 (a discussion held in this thread back in April) I just replayed it and again thought it was fun. Was it short? Yes. A bit. But it was still longer than the first and continued the story well. So there! :D

I just beat Doom 3 and Syberia 2.

Doom 3 was awesome; it was everything I expected it to be, no more, no less. I had a blast every time I played, all the way to the end credits. The graphics were . . . mind blowing. The sound was quite well done, and the gameplay was fun, quite fun. And the game did make me jump a few times.

Syberia 2 was a lot like the first. Intriguing storyline, incredible artwork, frustrating gameplay. Compelling, though, which made me play it to the end. Plus, I'm a sucker for old school point-and-click adventures; they're still my favorite genre, despite only one or two actual good ones coming out each year.

Yup. The first was released about two years ago, the second this past holiday. They're really one long game, split into two pieces. They're pretty good. They're not The Longest Journey good (the best recent adventure game, in my opinion), but they're worth it.

You can find the first one on Xbox, as well as PC.

While the second Monkey Island is a highlight of the series (the loogie contest comes to mind), the third is just as brilliant, and can still be found all over the place, usually in just the jewel case. I'd go looking; it can be had for as little as 10 bucks. The fourth game, which was a bit of a disappointment, can be found in the same manner, most likely, and was also released on the PS2 (for some reason).

Online, you can find people sellin the Monkey Island Archive, which is the first three games in one package, but be prepared to pay 50 bucks or more (well worth it, if you ask me).

Alternately, I could send you my copies of 3 and 4, provided they were returned eventually (they are my dear sweet babies).

I will try to help you search.....when I get off work. ;)

I also recommend Sam and Max Hit the Road, Indiana Jones and the...something... Atlantis. I also heard that Grim Fandango was good. I always liked the LucasArts adventures because you didn't die and have to start over. You never got yourself painted into a corner, so to speak; there was always a way to continue the game.

You might also like Outlaws. It is a First-Person-Shooter in the style of the Old West. Not the greates FPS ever, but the atmosphere and music was very reminiscent of 60's and 70's westerns.

The Monkey Island games were great though the three pack is something of a collector's item these days so might cost a bit more. The fourth was disappointing as they went to a 3D engine and didn't have the original creator on board.

That was just typing "Monkey Island" into Amazon. I'm sure Ebay, or some of those "Used and Old PC Games" websites could also help. Lucasarts tends to rerelease these things from time to time, so if you don't want to outlay that kind of cash, you could just wait a couple years; if you're lucky, they'll come out again. If you're not, the price for the series will just go up (eep!).

And Jimbow is absolutely freaking right when he recommends Sam & Max. Funniest game ever made. EVER. Definitely get that somehow (but only the CD version). Grim Fandango is also pretty good (great soundtrack).

I've still got The Dig. A great adventure game, though not everything I'd hoped it would be. That game was hyped for a long time, delayed heavily. When it finally released, it was quite good; just not excellent.

Wasn't it originally supposed to be an episode of Amazing Stories by Spielberg until he realized that it was too big to tell on TV?

Murray was the demonic talking skull. He had the best lines. Such as ". . . when I stride through the gates of Hell--" "Stride?" "Oh, okay. Roll, ROLL through the gates of Hell!"

There is just too much humor to remember. And it was so long ago.

I've played video games since way back when Pitfall on the Atari was the best thing ever. I have a PS2, but don't play it much. I played a lot of games on the original PS, mostly survival horror (I am the QUEEN of the Resident Evil games). I play The Sims now, as well as designing skins and objects for it. I also played EverQuest for ....too long. Three years, I think. I'm eagerly awaiting World of Warcraft though. :D

The good ol' days of gaming. I was always partial to Atari's Adventure. I still think it is a shining example of the importance of gameplay over graphics. I am a huge Blizzard fan but am not excited about either World of Warcraft or Starcraft: Ghost. They have rested on their laurels enough; they need a new idea other than Warcraft and Diablo.

Adventure? The one where you were a cube, and you had to slay the cube-dragons with your mighty pointy arrow thingy? And the bat would fly by and steal it? :D

Edit: The main reason I'm excited about WoW is that most of my old EQ buddies are going to be playing it. And it's not EQ, that's another big selling point in it's favor. ;)

That's the one! Except the dragons always looked like ducks to me. AWESOME!!!

I tried playing Ultima Online when it first came out. I found it to be more tedious than going to work. Typical session: Go into woods and chop trees, try to make them into arrows, fail miserably, repeat for 8 hours. Every once in a great while you would succeed and sell an arrow for 1 GP. WooHoo!!

WoW will be good, I am sure. I just don't want to devote that much time. And like I said earlier, Blizzard needs a new idea.
