View Full Version : Poll only for those attending GU-4

Hi all,

I know that our original GU schedule was Friday - Epcot (including dinner with The Man) and Saturday - The Magic Kingdom.

But we have a proposal. After lots of investigation, it seems MGM would be a better park for us than Epcot.

So are choices are:

Keep the original plan and go to Epcot all day Friday and eat dinner there at 6pm
Go to MGM instead and have dinner at MGM
Use a Park Hopper Option for Friday, which would include the morning at MGM and the afternoon/evening at Epcot (with dinner still at Epcot)-costs $35 extra than a one park a day ticket

To help in your voting (poll above this message), please visit http://www.themeparkinsider.com/parks/

Here are the attractions we could see at MGM and Epcot:

MGM

Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular (I hear it's...SPECTACULAR!)
Fantasmic (evening light show)
Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (that's so "us")
Star Tours (Star Wars - need I say more?)
Dinner-Hollywood's Brown Derby (http://www.themeparkinsider.com/parks/restaurant.cfm?ID=72)or 50's Prime Time Cafe (http://www.themeparkinsider.com/parks/restaurant.cfm?ID=68)(this looks like fun)

EPCOT

Test Track

Honey, I Shrunk The Audience

Cranium Command

IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth (evening light show)

Lunch: Boulangerie Patisserie (France)-if we can get in

Dinner with The Man: Restaurant Marrakesh (Morocco) 6pm reservations

I vote MGM. Fantasmic alone is worth the price of admission, if it's the same as the one at Disneyland.

SusanI know the thread is only for those going, but I have to put my two cents in.
The attractions at MGM are great! "Fantasmic" is supposed to be amazing, but the lines are long and you have to wait about 2 hours before the show starts if you want a seat. Also, at MGM is the "Aerosmith Rock n' Roller Coaster." It's a great ride. I have never laughed so hard as when I went on the "Twilight Zone Tower of Terror." Been on it three times and I don't think it could ever get boring. At Epcot you forgot to list "Mission: Space" which I heard is literally gut-wrenching.

Whichever park you attend, may you have a ton of fun.

Susan,
I'm not clear. If we go to MGM does that mean we do NOT get to have dinner with FPW? Or would he meet us there.

'Cause he is the reason for the season, if you know what I mean.

LOL! That's cracking me up, Maggers. Of course, we get to have dinner with FPW. But we can eat with him at MGM or Epcot. Either way he's gonna be there. So do not despair!

Can't wait to meet you and the other newbie(s)!

I have heard very good things about the Aerosmith Rock n' Roller Coaster, but the reviews for Mission: Space are mixed. That's why I didn't mention it.

Susan,

Phew, thank goodness! I was getting disheartened at the thought of not meeting The Man.

Because that's the best excuse I can give friends and family and co-workers for dropping everything during an extremely busy time at work and flying down to WDW to meet up with complete strangers and hang with them for 3 days. It's all about dinner with The Man. All the riotous fun the rest of us will have at DWD is icing on the cake.

What other newbies will be there? Or am I the only one? (*GULP*!)

The difference between Epcot and MGM boils down to what kind of day you want to spend. MGM has the best thrill rides in Disney World. The Tower of Terror is brilliant, and the Rock 'n Roller Coaster is excellent as well. The Indiana Jones Stunt Show is a good one, and of course Fantasmic! is very good.

For dinner, I would heartily recommend the Sci-Fi Dine In Theater. All of the tables are built inside renovated 50's era cars, and they are all facing a giant drive-in movie screen that shows classic clips and shorts throughout your meal. About half of the servers are on roller skates, and the whole thing is a blast. To top it off, the food is excellent as well.

The main things Epcot has going for it are Mission: Space, the World Showcase, and IllumiNations at the end of the night. IllumiNations is far and away the best fireworks show at any of the parks. The World Showcase is a lot of fun to just wander around, as each country is staffed entirely by natives from that country. If you are looking for relaxing sight-seeing, shopping and dining then that's the place to be.

Personally, I think you will all have much more fun if you go to MGM.

Dave, you have just reminded me of a song:

I'm so worried about what's happening today,
In the Middle East, you know.
And I'm so worried about the baggage retrieval
System they've got at Heathrow.
I'm so worried about the fashoins today,
I don't think they're good for your feet.
And I'm so worried about the shows on TV
That sometimes they want to repeat.
I'm so worried about what's happening today,
In the Middle East, you know.
And I'm so worried about the baggage retrieval
System they've got at Heathrow.
I'm so worried about my hair falling out,
And the state of the world today.
And I'm so worried about being so full of doubt
About everything anyway.
I'm so worried about modern technology,
I'm so worried about all the things
That they dump in the sea.
I'm so worried about it, worried about it,
Worried, worried, worried.
I'm so worried about everything that can go wrong.
I'm so worried about whether people like this song.
I'm so worried about this very next verse,
It isn't the best that I've got.
And I'm so worried about whether I should go on
Or whether I shouldn't just stop.

...

I'm so worried about whether I ought to have stopped.
And I'm so worried because it's the sort of thing I ought to know.
And I'm so worried about the baggage retrieval
System they've got at Heathrow.

...

I'm so worried about whether I should have stopped then,
I'm so worried that I'm driving everyone round the bend.
And I'm so worried about the baggage retrieval
System they've got at Heathrow.

What is a "wildcat" strike?

I believe it's a strike called by the union in violation of the contact they have with managment. Usually strikes are slated to begin on a certain day. There are negotiations leading up to the day, and if negotiations go well, the threatened strike is called off. If the negotiations go poorly, the strike is on.

But a wild cat strike happens suddenly and sort of unexpectedly, outside of union negotiations. At least I think that's what it is.

What is a "wildcat" strike?

A wildcat strike happens if you're, like walking thruogh an area inhabited by wild cats and they strike at or otherwise attack you.

Actually, it's a action by union members to strike or otherwise cease work without having an official vote taken. It is not formally endorsed by the "front office" of the union and therefore the strikers jobs are not protected. This is why wildcat strikes should involve large numbers of people, because management cannot selectively dismiss an employee for participating without dismissing all participants.

There were a million wildcat strikes in NYC in the '60's, or so it felt -- sanitation worker strikes, transit strikes, teacher strikes. I came to know the term well at a young age. Loved the teacher strikes, though, they were fun!

Hi all. Well, the strikes at Heathrow are not good for anyone stuck there this weekend, but they're not the norm at the Airport. I'm looking forward to the possibility of a GU-5 in London in 2006, and meeting up with some of you guys from the other side of the pond, and some of the guys on the board here I know like Steve Black in Scotland. Weather in London at any time of the year is pretty unpredictable, but also it's going to be the cost of flights for Stateside people as well getting to here. Accomodation in London will probably not be that cheap either, so am wondering if it might be an idea for any overseas vistors to fly into Gatwick Airport, then stay around that area - plenty of guest houses / hotels in this neck of the woods that are nice and relatively inexpensive, and the train fare for a day travelcard to get round all of London is only £10 if you're travelling in from outside London.

Of course staying in London means less travelling around and you're centrally based. I'm quite happy to source out some accomodation prices in this neck of the woods - 20 miles from London , and thus about 40 mins on a train. Best time to come here, well, May / June is fairly clement weather-wise, but again, the Summer Holiday flight season starts beginning of April, and thats when the airfares get hiked up. Flying into Heathrow can be a tad expensive as well (especially if you're flying British Airways - NOT cheap at all). I flew to Boston last June for £329 return (including tax), and I had to go through Heathrow to do it. You can do it from Gatwick a lot cheaper now, but you have to transfer in either Newark or Detroit, but you'd probably save yourself a bunch of dough. Similarly flights to San Fran, LA, NY, Florida etc all through Gatwick and Vice versa with transfers.

Just my two cents worth, BUT am looking forward to meeting up with any GU'ers coming over here.

Laters, Kevin

I was checking airfairs this weekend and Gatwick was much less. I was going to post today to see if that was an option. It is for me and sweetie.

What I really need now are some dates to get myself on the leave calendar here at work before someone else chooses those days.

Also my daughter just still might get her wedding together first half of 2006. Please don't make me choose.

Let's not forget the postal strike in 1970, Maggers! When I worked for the PO in 1973, I asked my union rep what would happen if we didn't get what we wanted in the new contract. He replied, "We start the strike drums beating. They tried to bust the union last time. Now they =know= they can't."

Now here comes a man with a paper in hand
Tellin' us our hard times are about to end
And if they don't give us what we like
He said, "Men, that's when ya gotta go on strike"
